Michael Connelly started writing the Harry Bosch novels back in 1992, when he premiered with The Black Echo. Now 12 novels later, he is back with Echo Park. Harry is working in the Open – Unsolved Crimes Unit with his old collaborator Kiz Rider. Thirteen years ago he had investigated the case of Marie Gesto, who went missing and has never been found. It was one of his cases that has haunted him and he has never stopped working. Below is my review of Michael Connelly’s 12th Harry Bosch novel: Cast of Characters: Heironymous (Harry) Bosch – named after the painter – retired LA Detective, now reassigned to the Open Unsolved Unit Kiz Rider – his ex-partner, who had moved upstairs to a cushy office job, now working in OU too with Harry. Abel Pratt – Head of Open Solved, just waiting for retirement in 4 weeks time Rick O’Shea – particular prosecutor handling the Waits case and running for DA Freddy Olivas – homicide detective working the Waits Case Raynard Waits – serial killer known as the Echo Park Bagman Rachel Walling.- FBI profiler, who Harry had a brief kinship with various years ago Plot: When a serial killer is caught red handed by the Los Angeles Police, he wants to confess to assorted unsolved murders, one of which is Marie Gesto. Bosch is brought into the fold and will have to now come face to face with the monster who killed Marie. Now I have been a fan of Michael Connelly since his firstborn novel, Black Echo, and the reputation of Harry Bosch has come to be a bestloved character. His life is perplexed due to his “unique police ethics” and the way he throws himself into each case. For him it is personal. In Echo Park, he has to evaluate if the killer Raynard Waits, is telling the truth or just attempting to plea bargain down his sentence to keep out of the way of the death penalty. The upcoming election for district attorney is not helping… in fact it seems that it might be the reason behind the confession. Bosch has to battle his own demons, plus thence coming from political influence in and out of the state. The dialog is believable (as in all Harry Bosch novels) and the way things unravel is always a surprise. Even if you have never read a Harry Bosch novel before, you may without apparent effort pick this one up and have a fantastic cop vs. serial killer vs political intrigue crime novel to enjoy. Very well written and will keep you guessing and entertained. Highly commended to any person who enjoys a good crime novel. |
