Adventures of Cash Laramie and Gideon Miles Vol. II proceeds to chronicle the tales of two unorthodox 19th century U.S. Marshals. With seven more adventures, this collection includes the novella “Origin of White Deer” where the outlaw marshal leaves his Arapaho home as a teen to find his origins in the lawless town of Cheyenne, Wyoming. These noir tales infuse the Western genre with a fresh perspective on topics like race relations and social justice while still delivering pulse-racing action in the tradition of Wanted: Dead or Alive and Gunsmoke.

Volume II starts out with the ‘Origin Story’ of Cash Laramie–how he got his name, his values, and that obsidian arrowhead he wears around his neck. ‘The Origin of White Deer’ is the longest piece in the collection, and nicely bookends with ‘Reflections in a Glass of Maryland Rye.’ The latter depicts a much older, remorseful Cash meditating on his actions and the finalties of frontier justice.

In between there’s a lot of action, both of the gun-blazing type and the darker, ‘noir’ style reminescent of The Unforgiven. The intrepid Gideon Miles also makes an appearance.

Personally, the Adventures of Cash Laramie stories remind me of old radio serials like Have Gun, Will Travel and Gunsmoke, though un-sanitized and rendered in shades of gray.

Definitely worth your silver dollars.

I read until my eyes hurt. In the case of Vol.II, I just didn’t stop until I was finished. Even then, I wanted more. I feel more connected to these characters with every story.
I can hear Cash light a lucifer on his boot. I can feel the look in those cold blue eyes . I am right there in Cheyenne watching with the rest of the townfolk, from the sidelines, holding my breath, as he doles out his own personal brand of justice.

Cash investigates crimes and exacts justice in a vivid, Western noir world. The stories are still told in Grainger’s confident, no-nonsense style.

But I felt like I got to know Cash Laramie a lot better in Volume 2.

The first story in the collection, “The Origins of White Deer,” (co-written with Chuck Tyrell) takes us back to Cash’s formative days with the Arapaho tribe. His biological parents died in a battle at Fall Creek, and Cash ends up going to Cheyenne as a letter from his father had requested. It’s there that he demonstrates his abilities and realizes his calling as a lawman. This story gives us the full picture of the challenges Cash faces as a biracial man on the frontier. It’s a well-researched, patient piece that completes this character’s fascinating history.

Every story in here is strong, but I particularly dug “Reflections in a Glass of Maryland Rye.” This is a chilling tale that shows Cash living with one wrong decision. I liked seeing this other side of Cash — reflective, sad, and uncertain.

Overall this is an excellent read and I know that Cash fans are already hungry for Volume 3.

Want to undertake some things that cause some amazing weight loss. Kinda crazy stuff, but they’re easy and fun. Look, weight loss isn’t with regards to all that stuff you do in the gym or eat in the kitchen. Other things play a role in losing weight. In this brief article, I’m going to percentage with you 2 powerful ways you and drop the weight.

Amazing  Weight  Loss

1.  Do  the  spin

As in, you spun around with arms out. Do it. You can’t picture it? Ok, think when it comes to how kids do it. That’s precisely what you want to do. As crazy as this may seem, spinning does work indirectly for weight loss. It’s not a direct weight loss exercise. Instead it goes 1-step beyond exercising. It goes directly into your CONTROL CENTER…. you’re Endocrine System.

That’s the thing that controls hormones and how and when they’re freed and in what amounts.

The thing is, your Endocrine System is not working decently due to all the unnatural chemicals that are in our food, water, air, packaging, etc. These chemicals mimic hormones and throw off your Endocrine System. Anyway, for weight loss to be quick and efficient, you need your hormones working like they should.

That’s where spinning comes in. They stimulate a normality to your normal hormonal production. Give spins a try. Just spun around 5-10 times or up until the point where you are just a little bit dizzy. Please… DON’T spun to the point where you’re wholly dizzy.

2. Rub your belly with your hand being warm

How do you do this? Rub your hands together. This will formulate a heat on them. Then, while lying down, rub circles for 1 minute with your right hand all over your belly. After that, take your other hand and rub circles for a minute.

This works for 2 reasons. The circular rubbing stimulates your digestive procedure into a more effective parsing out of nutrients and foods… and it does this faster. Second, the heat from your hands may effortlessly pass through your skin and smack-dab into your fat cells where it causes havoc. Crazy, but if you did it for 2 weeks, you’d see it works.

These 2 awful weight loss mysteries work, no matter of how crazy they may seem.

From Publishers WeeklyBradley, a psychologist drawing on current brain research, argues that teenagers are fundamentally nuts. While 95 percent of the brain develops in early childhood, the most progressed parts aren’t finished until adolescence is closely over. As a result, teens may appear unstable, dysfunctional and unpredictable, with temporarily impaired judgment and decision-making processes. In addition, Bradley argues, contemporary culture further challenges teens’ thinking capabilities; the prevalence of sex, drugs and violence makes the teen’s occupation of cognitive balancing even more precarious. The good news is that parents do make a difference, and Bradley distinctly explains how parents may give hope or courage to and guide their kids through these tumultuous years. Stressing that teens are still “children,” Bradley inspires parents to respond like “dispassionate cops,” instructing and remaining calm even when teens behave outrageously. While Bradley’s prose which he admits might be shocking and offensive at times may be initially off-putting to some, the book is compelling, lively and realistic. Using crisp, believable anecdotes that are alternately poignant and hysterically amusive (while avoiding generic examples, jargon or psychobabble), Bradley homes in on real-life scenarios, showing parents, for instance, how to respond when their teen is “raging,” and how to set curfews and limits. Bradley draws a bright picture of what the teen is going through, and gives parents the tools to tackle contemporary issues together. An valuable parachute to parents diving into the teen years. (Sept.)Forecast: A $100,000 selling campaign, a 10-city author tour, the recent widespread media coverage of related neurological selective information and above all, the need for sensible, funny books on raising teenagers all bode well for this book’s sales.

Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library JournalFor parents who have tried everything but still have teens who are out of control, Bradley’s Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy! is a funny, blunt, and ascertaining book. Philadelphia psychologist Bradley approaches the subject from the standpoint that teens are, well, a little nuts; using current brain research, he points out that the most sophisticated elements of the mind are not developed until the end of adolescence ergo, the acting out, mood swings, ADHD, depression, suicide, anorexia, etc. The basic premise is that parents are still the most influential strength in their kids’ lives and that the old rules of parenting are not only unhelpful but destructive. Adults ought to take the blame for ignoring rampant alcohol addictions among teens, permitting sex to saturate culture so much that kids don’t even recognise what intimacy and dedication are, and believing that raising children in 2001 may be easy. Rejecting peer pressure as an pardon for unacceptable behaviors, Bradley distinguishes amid “normal” and “insane.” One chapter describes negotiation, decision-making, and the enforcement of rules; another deals with the new phenomenon of teen rage and how to survive it. Overall, the message is that kids may become fine humans even if they screw up a lot, and you need to play the parent, not the cool confidante. Therapist and professor Sells (Savannah State Univ.; Treating the Tough Adolescent) deals with teens whose conduct falls into the realm of “insanity”: kids who are enraged, push buttons endlessly, steal, ditch school, use drugs or get pregnant, and defy authority in general. Good, well-meaning parents, he notes, are worn out, and these families need prompt help. Sells’s approach is all “how-to”: he provides seven basic steps, backed up with lists of systems in the “What do I do if…” mode. These steps will empower parents to regain authority, fetch families out of deep trouble, and start out to restore the love parents and teens once held for each other. Sells’s extensive work and exploration with teens and parents is evident. Both books are splendid selections for public libraries. Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, PA
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From BooklistMore than a few parents will agree that adolescence is a time when kids go temporarily nuts–and take their parents with them. Yet, according to Bradley, who has counseled teens and their families for almost 30 years, there’s a great deal of neurological proof to prove that adolescent “brain damage” is no joke. With a touch of humor to leaven the seriousness of his subject, Bradley speaks candidly to parents, guiding them through the new science and exploring how the determinations may be applied to real-life relationships. With a keen eye, he examines everything from anorexia and oppositional conduct to anger, alerting parents to signals that mean professional support is the only way to go. He scolds parents more than once for contributing to a culture that saddles young people with mixing up messages in regards to drugs, sex, and more, but he’s convinced that if parents may change their own behavior, they may support their kids through difficult times. It’s all stitched together with real-life stories, which will smooth the way for dealing with today’s “new millennium adolescent.” Stephanie Zvirin
Copyright © American Library Association. These vulgarities, sexual references, and violence are essential to the books content. The author also apologizes for the need to employ them.

If your teenager had a serious case of the flu, you would be sympathetic and helpful. When the same teenager acts in ways you disagree with, are you inclined to be unsympathetic and challenging? Dr. Bradley argues in this intriguing book that your reaction should be very similar. Both are usually natural occurrences of body dysfunctions from which your teen will recover. Although that may sound like a psychological metaphor, Dr. Bradley points out that research with MRIs shows that the growth of the corpus callosum (which coordinates cross-brain functions) and development of the prefrontal cortex (which civilizes responses that the old brain stimulates) are both occurring during the teenage years. Until those brain developments are more complete, your teen will react in bizarre ways that she or he will be unable to explain. I found that way of thinking about teenage behavior to be fascinating.

My own description of the teenage years experienced by our children was that boys behavior generally went downhill until age 13 when it bottomed out, to begin gradually improving thereafter. For girls, the decline in behavior seemed to begin around 13, and started to improve after age 20.

Dr. Bradley points out that teens have always been like this. So what has changed? Weve created a world dripping with sex, drugs, and violence and plunked our temporarily insane children in the middle of it. Parents often treat their teens as though they can handle it. The fact is that cannot handle it and they know this. Teens left on their own as small adults not only . . . [make serious mistakes], they become depressed and rageful in the bargain. Dr. Bradleys descriptions of the increased exposure to these influences on television, at home, in school, and with friends will leave you convinced that we have a more toxic environment for todays teenagers. He cites many case histories and statistics to make his points very compelling.

The solution is for parents to change, and become a more positive influence on their teens. I was especially moved by his observation that parents need to stop mourning for their younger, happy, well-behaved child who will not return any time soon.

He offers ten commandments for being a good parent:

(1)  Behave and think dispassionately;

(2)  Listen well and support emotionally;

(3)  Say little in a pleasant way;

(4)  Take the time you need to make an appropriate response;

(5)  Forget your personal pride in finding a response;

(6)  Avoid being physical, even friendly gestures can be annoying to teens;

(7)  Apologize for anything you have done wrong;

(8)  Accept the identity your teen is trying out;

(9) Be true to your own beliefs; and

(10) Remember that all this will eventually pass.

The book offers excellent guidance on rule-setting and enforcement that are similar to what worked well with our now grown-up teens.

The book also has sections on how to deal with common problems like privacy, angry teens, drugs, sex and dating, family problems, discussing legal versus illegal drugs. You are also given a sense of what is normal and abnormal behavior related to acting out, depression, eating disorders, and suicide risk. For any hint of abnormal behavior, get professional help fast (apparently 19% of teens have given serious thought to how they would commit suicide, and the depressed teens are not the ones most at risk). You are also given good ideas for how to get teens to professional help. One of the best parts of this section is pointing out how two parents should cooperate (if you and your spouse are together) and single parents can best cope….

I particularly liked two final pieces of advice. It turns out love is the magic, after all. Keep your sense of humor!

After you finish reading this book, I suggest that you think about where your own behavior as a teen was irrationally impulsive. Dr. Bradley cites a horrible night of misbehavior that he had as a teen. I know I gave into my impulses in various occasions. Now imagine how you would have liked your parents to respond while this was going on, both with and without the house of cards falling in on you. Those recollections may be your best guide to how you can improve, and earn even higher trust and respect from your teen.

Support emotional messes and illnesses as generously as you support physical ills!

     Memorize it and practice Dr. Bradley’s suggestions until they become your first reaction to the teenage craziness around you. I don’t say this casually. I say this because I know, for a fact, what Bradley says works. It works when nothing else seems to and when you are absolutely certain you have no idea where that ex-child, now crazy person, came from. Less humorously…his suggestions work when you are desperately close to watching your son or daughter become a statistic. It works when nothing else has and, believe me, if you are at this point in his or her life, nothing else might. Simply put, Dr. Bradley saved my son. Now, he will say that I did, and I may have been the one who was mouthing the words and acting the part, but the words were his and the role was his, both borne from years of sensitive and insightful counseling of parents and their teenagers.

    I know. I sat on the couch across from his. He watched and listened and I was hysterical. He made the same suggestions (quietly and dispassionately!) to me in my insanity that he shares in his book. He pounded them into my head and I became convinced of a few things: my son was crazy and I was his anchor. It is a few years later and my son and I are emerging from the insanity of those years, but I keep the book close by and I read and reread his words and I hear them echo and I vow always to follow them: “dispassionate cop” “short sentences, few syllables” “apologize (me, not my son).” Of course, I sometimes fail, but teenagers have a generous way of providing more opportunities to practice. I knew I had been given one of those chances and succeeded when I responded calmly, and dispassionately in a short sentence of few syllables and my son said, “Mom…stop that, because…it…it is….working.”

    Bradley’s knowledge in this area is broad and deep, his suggestions are easy to understand, his book is poignant, clear, and frantic-parent friendly. His humor is readily evident and heartening. Reading the book is almost as good as sitting in a session with him…seriously. Read it seriously. Follow it seriously. It works…seriously.

		Thanks, Dr. Bradley.

I have a 17 year old son, and I wish I had read this book 5 years ago! The book is written in 3 parts – Part 1 on teens and the issues in their lives, Part 2 on parents, and Part 3 on strategies for dealing with those issues. (He even includes a section on internet obsession – a big issue in our house.) When I finished reading this book, I felt so hopeful. The author provides a guideline for staying sane while dealing with the craziness, and at the same time maintaining a connection with your kids in a way that fosters strength, love, compassion, and most and best of all – mutual respect. Not a small feat, and he does it with a warm sense of humor to top it off. I would have given this book more stars if I could!

The primary I ever heard of Myspace was that it was the platform from which the unspeakable evil that is ‘My Chemical Romance’ was launched. As I grabbed my gun and headed off to wage war on what would inevitably be the end of the world, a good friend said to me, ‘I think Myspace has other stuff too.’

Of course, he was right. As I investigated further, it appeared that Myspace was a utile networking tool, a place to meet other people for fun, for love, for business; an interchange of ideas and words, music and film. There were pages consecrated to a whole range of artists from Bob Dylan to Metallica, thru the botheration that is ‘My Chemical Romance’. I was satisfied. Myspace would no longer be the target of one of my insane rampages versus terrible music. Remember ‘Busted’? – they didn’t genuinely split up… I killed them. And I did it for your benefit.

Getting into the swing of Myspace, I begun to browse around. I found I could listen to music samples for free by new and conventional artists. It is even possible to discover outstanding new bands by merely typing in the sort of music you like listening to normally. What a great idea – no dick-head record labels and shitty gigs to deal with (yet). Here was a place where talent spoke for itself, it was not dependant on cash to promote it, or luck to discover it. An artisan may tell the world what they’re with regards to and show the world what they’ve got. This, I was sure, was the future of music.

One aspect I found very useful, in reference to music, writing, film, or whatsoever talent was on display, was the capacity to give feedback. Sure, perhaps Bob Dylan and Metallica don’t go checking their Myspace inbox on a daily basis, but I recognise for a fact that the unsigned bands and undiscovered writers do. Telling somebody you respect what they are doing, or perchance providing a heap of much necessitated constructive criticism, is something that you can’t as without apparent effort do standing at the back of a crowd in a little pub, or reading a book in your room. These words of encouragement and support may make good artists great.

When I firstborn came across Myspace I was going through a transitional amount of time in my music tastes. I’d matured significantly since my nu-metal youth, and was presently exploring a wide range of sounds. The internet helped surely helped, telling me what my favourite artists liked and were influenced by, forming chains of bands that I could explore. At the time of my Myspace enlightenment, I had just gotten into ‘The Shins’, ‘Modest Mouse’ and ‘Death-Cab For Cutie’ (Yes, I’ll confess had been observing ‘The OC’).

By listing these three bands as influences upon the results to be generated, in a well laid-out search facility, I was capable to see to it the music I sampled would be at least inspired by something I like. I likewise entered ‘The Libertines’ to add a little British influence to the results.

More than anything I was impressed by the ingenuity of this mode of search. If I’d typed in ‘Indie-Rock’, god knows what nonsensicality I could have found, but I was impressed with the hundreds of bands thrown at me by the website. There surely was a lack of talent in sure cases, as may be expected in any potpourri of novice musicians, but the results were listenable. Some bands were genuinely impressive, and others not bad. The influences distinctly showed, which is not a bad thing by any means, I had after all searched with this in mind.

I decisive that I would seek out unsigned or unknown bands, rather than the seemingly usual ones that popped up. I’d never in truth heard of these bands, but I wanted to make a musical discovery, something few others were genuinely conscious of.

A few artists genuinely stood out in my mind. Perhaps at the forefront of this group was an Irish band claiming to be ‘Arctic Monkeys… only a lot less hype.’ Their name was ’15 Minutes’, and according to the selective information given on their personal Myspace, they had been around for three years, with two permanent members. Vocalist/ guitarist, Robert McGlade and Drummer Adam Steele were the two ceaseless members, though since the arrival of lead guitarist Aaron Mooney and Bassist Keith Bernard, the band has reached unexampled levels of creativity.

With a Myspace music page, chosen tracks will mechanically play when you log on, so you have no choice but to listen to the music of whatsoever band you want to read about. When I initial clicked on the ’15 Minutes’ page, I assumed I had stumbled upon another well-established band. Perhaps I had even found the Irish ‘Arctic Monkeys’.

’15 Minutes’ are, however, unsigned and underappreciated. Their sound is remindful of ‘The Libertines’ and ‘Arctic Monkeys’, but there is a fierce quality of being one of a kind there. The lyrics may not be as intellectual as those of our Pete, but they are far superior to those of the ”Monkeys’. The guitar is incredible, exceptionally on a brilliant, ludicrously attentiongetting track called ‘Can You Help Me (Richard Hell)?’ This song could without apparent effort be one of the greatest around, which is ironic given the subject matter is the problem of not being successful. When I asked Rob McGlade (guitarist) what incisively the song was about, he told me ‘I just thought that it would be good to write a song with [Richard Hell] in it, basically begging for his help, because I think most new music is sheer bollocks.’ Amen.

‘In Dublin’ must be ’15 Minutes” best song. After one listen I was singing along; it had burrowed deep into my head like only the best or worst of songs may do, and I ascertain you, ‘In Dublin’ is of the former rather than the latter. Every fellow member of the band is on form, and there is so much energy and passion in this song that when listening, it seems they cannot fail in their quest for recognition. This is genuinely a modern, nihilistic take on the ‘fairytale/ballad’ of Dublin’s reasonable city.

‘The Boy Who Cried Woolfe’ begins with a jumpy guitar intro that will surely be the soundtrack to a good deal of a hard night’s drink-fuelled shenanigans. Many of the scuffles and drunken states I’ve found myself in over the years come to mind when I listen to this track, and it occurs to me just how well ’15 Minutes’ have captured the non-glamorous, and utterly confusing, world of contemporary youth.

‘Miss Liberty’ is perhaps the least impressive and most vacant of ’15 Minutes” impressive array of tracks. The lyrics are disappointing when equated to other tracks, and the guitar is surely weaker. The bass, however, drives the song well and salvages much for the band. ‘Miss Liberty’ might not be clever or musically sophisticated, but it is bouncy and pleasurable nonetheless.

’15 Minutes’ have tapped into the culture and music of today and it is an inevitability that they will become the biggest thing in music in a very short time. Even their worst song is still good, and I could unquestionably see ‘Miss Liberty’ become a big success. If my prophecies for Myspace are correct, it will catapult them to stardom in no time.

On-line security for kids is a real topic for parents. The internet when employed decently may be a powerful instructional tool for children. At the same time, it may be very detrimental. It is in my sentiment networking sites, only blurs the line among what is reality and what is the truth. They have fixed control and there is no way of genuinely monitoring the content of these sites.

Children do not have the aroused maturity to recognize what is a dangerous contact and who they consider are their friends. The on-line world is no dissimilar then reality. The assumption is, if he/she is the same age, shares the same interests and lives in the same city then that will have to be true. If he/she says he is my friend and wants to meet me to talk or play, then it’s no dissimilar than a friend at school. We as parents know that isn’t always the case!

Even if there is no direct contact with the child and a parent monitors who is added as “their friend”, networking websites link into other profiles. Its too easy to obtain sufficient selective information when it comes to the child merely by searching their friends or reading posts the child made either on someone’s internet site or a message board. Should we put our children at risk just because they want to connect with others?

When my daughter came home one day, stating her friend had a myspace page and she wanted one too. When I asked her if she knew what myspace was, she did not have any idea. She just wanted what her friend had. Therefore, I decisive a good substitute would be to fabricate her own web site where I controlled the content. She could percentage it with her friend, but at the same time be safe. Not to mention, I could keep family and friends altered on her activenesses and developments as she is a particular needs child

When designing a internetsite for your child, here are things to remember:

Personal information: Do not list your city where you live, emplacement of school, or any child’s personal data you do not want for public consumption. Eliminate any method of contacting the child directly. If a child has his or her own email address, only percentage that with friends and family but do not post it on-line.

Parent’s Statement: Enclose a statement or disclaimer that this internetlocation is monitored by a parent and there is no data to contact the child. Also inform users of the internetlocation all content has parent approval and is kid friendly. I would highly commend providing a method either by form or email for another parent to contact you directly for further questions or concerns. The goal is to admonish potential predators but still give hope or courage to feedback from other parents.

Kid Approved links and content: While designing your site, remunerate careful attention to the content of the internet sites you link. Clearly you don’t want to link into pornography or graphically violent sites. FCC has specific guidlines when syndication to children. You may view their data at Kidz Privacy. Making sure that links do not point to non-kid friendly web sites may be tricky. Here are galore tips to keep in mind.

I wanted to create a pink panther page so I went to find cartoon videos on You Tube. I later came upon after I posted the cartoon of pink panther, at the end of the movie, it gave a selections of other videos you may view. Little did i know, one of the videos contained a very provocative dance to the Pink Panther Theme song! I quickly got rid of it and searched to find an alternate. Since You Tube commended selection is key word based, it took me a few hours to find a clip that only offered kid friendly videos at the end. It was time consuming but worth the effort.

On-line gaming sites: Some on-line gaming websites have free games you may post on your website. Most of the websites will link back into the main web site where users may view other on-line games. Some of the web sites may or may not integrate incorporate suitable content depending upon the age. So be selective and restrict websites you don’t want your children viewing. There are galore dissimilar types of online software such as Cyber Patrol that helps parents control not only the content they see, but likewise monitors their time on the internet.

Create restrictive access pages: Restrict any areas you would like to post more personal data like a family calendar, specific school events, etc. Only give select friends and family access to this information.

How do I design my site?

There are on-line communities like geocities that offer free on-line website building. My concern with using that type of service for a children’s internetlocation is the advertising. You may not keep out of the way of it and it is clickable! or a few bucks a month, these types of services offer DIY templates where you may construct and design your own internet site without the worry of advert and pop ups. Or you may design your web site yourself even though apps like MS Frontpage, Adobe Dreaweaver or MS Publisher. Graphic Designers may also make creating children’s websites painless and a fantasti surprise. What I like with regards to creating your own children’s internetsite is you will have the capacity to select your own URL which is much requiring little effort for a child to do not forget then a lengthy address. So to me, it is worth the expense.

Vietnam.

A young American soldier waits for his enemy, rifle in hand, finger on the trigger. He is affrighted to move and yet scared not to move. Gunshots crackle in the still air. The soldier fires blindly into the distant trees at an unseen enemy. He crouches and waits — heart pounding, tense and trembling, biting back tears. When will it all be over?

Walter Dean Myers joined the army on his seventeeth birthday, at the onset of American involvement in Vietnam, but it was the death of his brother in 1968 that for a limitless time changed his mind regarding war.

In a gripping and powerful story-poem, the award-winning author takes readers into the heart and mind of a young soldier in an alien land who comes face-to-face with the enemy. Strikingly illustrated with evocative and in an emotional manner wrenching collages by Caldecott Honor artisan Ann Grifalconi, this unforgettable portrait captures one American G.L’s haunting experience.

From Publishers WeeklyCamouflage endpapers set the stage for Myers’s (Handbook for Boys: A Novel, reviewed below) strange and gripping picture book set in Vietnam and geared to older readers. “The land of my enemy has wide valleys, mountains that stretch along the far horizon, rushing brown rivers, and thick green forests,” the riveting narrative poem begins. Grifalconi’s (the Everett Anderson books) sophisticated mixed-media collage shows a breathtaking vista, lush with trees, jagged mountains and terraced hillsides. On the next spread, Myers drops readers into the jungle with the narrator, a young American soldier, and his squad of nine men. The protagonist makes a nerve-wracking trek (“Somewhere in the forest, concealed in the shadows, is the enemy”), witnesses a bombing raid (“My body shakes. I tell myself that I will not die on this bright day”) and comes face-to-face with an enemy soldier (“In a heartbeat, we have learned too much regarding each other”neither fires). Myers, who fought in Vietnam, lays bare the young man’s emotions. Short phrases combine power with grace as the author artfully conveys the outward events of warfare and the resulting inner turmoil: in the village, the young man sees “the enemy. A brown woman with rivers of age etched deeply into her face. An old man, his eyes heavy with memory.” Grifalconi, too, subtly highlights war’s ridiculous contradictions. One in particular striking scene finds the G.I. facing his enemy all over a field alight with heartbreakingly lovely flowers and wildlife. Readers will hope this is as close as they ever get to the real thing. Ages 8-12.
Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library JournalGrade 4 Up-Myers’s verse powerfully evokes the experiences of a young soldier in this picture book. Searching the unfamiliar landscape, his squad tries to sense the presence of the enemy in the jungle. But who is the enemy? The old man in the village? The babies? Planes pass overhead, dropping bombs “at a distance that is never distant enough.” The author captures the young man’s fear, uncertainty, and weariness. “We move again. We are always moving.” The layers of Grifalconi’s full-page collage art conceal and disclose the flickering images of the text. Figures blend into the forest. Shadow and shape converge. The repetition of words and a landscape scene at the beginning and near the end of the book are exceptionally effective because they are the same except for the addition of fire and plumes of smoke in the “wide valleys” and “thick green forests” after the patrol has finished it is mission. These pictures are difficult to erase from one’s memory. When the soldier does encounter an enemy as young as himself, neither fires. Close sufficient to see one another, they can not kill. “In a heartbeat, we have learned too much with regards to each other.” Myers and Grifalconi’s demonstration is one that is hard to forget.
Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato
Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From BooklistGr. 4-8. Myers’ Fallen Angels (1988) remains a landmark YA novel when it comes to an American teenager in Vietnam. At 17, Myers was a soldier there; his brother passed from physical life there. Now, in this spare, poetic picture book for older readers, Myers speaks in the voice of one young soldier who is with his squad for the duration of combat in the forest: “I am so afraid.” With his fear is his consciousness of his own violence: “I am the enemy.” The words express the physicalness of the combat soldier’s experience–the crush of his combat boots, the sound of his breath, the sweat on his back. Grifalconi’s collages of photos and watercolors are uneven in quality. The best of them extend the sense of fragility by focusing on a leaf, a helmet, a bird versus the dense brush and the exploding sky, and prepare readers for the climactic moment when, suddenly, the African American boy comes face to face with an enemy soldier who is as frighted as he is. Myers’ message is in the lack of drama. There’s no heroism, just weariness and waiting for the war to be over. Hazel Rochman
Copyright © American Library Association. R. Bird
All at once lush and frightening, Walter Dean Myers has penned a tale that seeks to remind us what war actually is. There are “Enemies” that are old men and babies. “Enemies” that sit beneath trees and contemplate their loved ones. Never have the lessons of Vietnam been more poignant or necessitated than they are right now. In writing this book, Myers has sought to present war beyond gore and gloom, looking rather at the very essence of death itself. Helped in this try by the award winning collage artisan Ann Grifalconi “Patrol” is a exceptionally bad or displeasing story that may hit a little too close to home for some, and not close sufficient for others.

Told in picture book format (a format that I suspect will raise a few eyebrows right there) the story follows one man allround his day in Vietnam. The man is frightened. He knows that his enemy is nearby and wants to injure him, just as he (on numerous level) wants to hurt his enemy. The man’s patrol burns down an innocent village that may house members of the enemy. He calls in bombs and dives into elephant grass for cover. There, he without intention runs face to face with the enemy. “In a heartbeat, we have learned too much regarding each other”. Both men escape and the patrolman goes back to base camp to write a letter to a loved one. He writes, “I am so very tired of this war”.

Taken in total, the book is a mélange of beauty and fear. Grifalconi has deftly intertwined illustration and photograph in the pages of this book. There are extraordinary pictures in which men drawn only with the slightest of pen lines crouch beneath big overblown tree leaves. When bombs burst in the distance, planes are both the actual cut-outs of airplanes and the hollows cut out of a misty sky. The men looking at are bathed in the orange light of the distance. Myers’ text is up to the challenge of confronting what war is. Though the author never goes so far as to condemn the idea of war itself, he finds other ways of showing how ridiculous some wars in truth are. When you’re as good an author as Walter Dean Myers, all you have to do is write the truth and your message will appear for you.

The inside cover of this book proclaims that it is age range is 8-12, which is patently ridiculous. I won’t debate if it is suitable or unsuitable for an eight year-old. That is left exclusively up to the reader (though there is not one thing gory or horrific sufficient to shock a kid of that age). What I take issue at is the age of 12 indicated as the oldest age at which a person would want to read this book. First of all, this book is perfective for teens and even college age kids and adults in giving a good eye for eye glare at the horrors of being caught in a fighting situation. Second, this book has a myriad of dissimilar uses. Teachers and librarians are constantly on the look out for picture books that are mature sufficient for those adults learning to read. What better intention could this book have?

When Walter Dean Myers joined the army at the age of seventeen, he had to come to grips with Vietnam and the fact that his brother passed away in combat. For this author, this book strikes close to home, revealing the stupidity of fighting. With our nation perpetually in combat these days, it takes books like this one to remind us of the dangers of acting as a nation without thought or intelligence. “Patrol” gives us some lessons to learn.

My squad of nine men are in the forest. Above me, birds twitter nervously in the treetops. Insects and little animals scurry through the underbrush, attempting to keep away from the crush of my combat boots. The squad leader raises his hand. We stop. The sound of my breath is soft in the morning air. Somewhere in the forest, concealed in the shadows, is the enemy. He knows I have come to kill him. He waits for me…” Walter Dean Myer’s autobiographical picture book chronicles a day in the life of one soldier, on patrol, in the jungles of Viet Nam. His spare, poetic text comes alive on the page, and takes the glamor and excitement out of war as you trudge through the difficult, hot terrain, ever vigilant. “We move again. We are always moving. My legs ache. My shoulders sag. My thousand eyes look for death in the waving bamboo fields.” You may feel the smooth wooden stock of the soldier’s rifle, the cold sweat running down his back, the fear and quivering as shots are fired and bombs explode, and the rapid beating of his heart. “I think I see the enemy. I reload and shoot again. It is only a shadow, but I do not stop shooting. In war, shadows are enemies, too.” But mostly, you feel the weariness and futility. “I am so tired. I am so very tired of this war.” Ann Grifalconi’s stunning, multi-media collages are evocative and gripping, and together word and art paint an eloquent and powerfully bright portrait of the Viet Nam War. Perfect for youngsters 9-12, Patrol: An American Soldier In Vietnam is a haunting experience that shouldn’t be missed, and unquestionably one of the best new books of 2002.

The American boy band, Jonas Brothers, is not only making headlines because of their music and acting efforts. Recent controversies involving Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas have caused Disney to lose a great deal of cash to cover up bad promotion swirling around. From the buzz-making Jonas Brothers shirtless pictures to debatable dating rumors left and right, the teen group act has been receiving a lot of jabs from the media, paparazzi and currently, a heap of disappointed fans.

The rumors were said to have been caused by the brothers’ respective relationships with famous young stars in Hollywood. With the exception of the oldest sibling, Kevin, the rest of the Jonas Brothers have caused a stir because of highly publicized dates and affairs.

Joe Jonas’ highly sensationalized break up with country singer, Taylor Swift, caused a major buzz in Hollywood. To compound matters, Swift has been very vocal with regards to her sensations towards the split. Swift said that the break up was sudden and only happened through a phone call. Joe, according to her, was the one who made the ‘break up’ call that only lasted for 27 seconds.

“When I look at that person, I’m not even going to do not forget the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 27 seconds when I was 18,” said Taylor in a talk show interview.

In response, Joe rebutted the claims of his ex-girlfriend and said that the phone call only lasted as it did because Taylor wasn’t open to listen his side. He likewise refused other allegations that he cheated on Swift with 10,000 BC actress, Camilla Belle. Although Camilla and he are already dating, he insisted that he never cheated on any girlfriend.

Nick Jonas has also been the target of tabloids because of his kinship with Hannah Montana star, Miley Cyrus. The two apparently broke up because of Nick’s new fling, Selena Gomez, another Disney star. Selena starred in the Jonas Brothers’ music video, Burnin’ Up as the singer’s love interest. The incident caused the two teen actresses to cause cat fight rumors and the Youtube war amid Miley and Selena likewise emerged because of Nick.

Despite these, the Jonas Brothers is taking the rumors in stride. They also have the support of Disney and their record label. However, Disney did numerous reprimanding to the siblings to keep away from further harm on their squeaky clean effigy peculiarly when there some jarring Jonas Brothers shirtless photos disseminate all over the internet. In a great deal of reports, it was said that Disney is alarmed with the issues that have been surfacing in regards to their sweet, clean, and dandy young stars like Hannah Montana, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and just recently, the Jonas Brothers.

Together with Samuel L Jackson, Clooney co-sponsors ‘Rock for Darfur’, a series of charity concerts organised by MySpace.com and Oxfam. The funds go to help Oxfam’s disaster relief work and to aid refugees in Sudan and neighbouring Chad. Finally, there is ‘United Way’ ” Clooney’s own self-supported programme which collects cash and goods from respective donors and distributes the proceeds to local charities.

The foundation’s motto is: ‘To help, to heal and to excel.’ As Jackie explains: “Sometimes it takes only one act of benignity and caring to alter a person’s life. Long ago, when I was a child in need of assistance, somebody was kind to me. My charitable foundation is my way of passing on that kindness. By supplying scholarships, grants and funding … I am helping to make the world a better place.”

Chan’s charitable donations cover a wide spectrum that includes home care for youngsters at risk; support for unemployed youngsters; professional self-empowerment counselling; training camps for students; and anti-suicide campaigns. Over the years, the foundation’s actions have grown substantially, broadening their scope to include medical services and help for victims of natural disasters or humans suffering from severe illnesses.

His own Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation focusses specially on global warming, which may be combated by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting substitute and renewable energy sources. “I urge people around the globe to stand up,” he declares, “and ask local leaders, if they haven’t already, to pledge to buy cleaner cars, build green facilities, and buy green power like wind or solar energy. Our actions may determine if we become a casualty in the war for a habitable planet for generations to come.” His worries also extend to sustaining clean water furnishes all around the world (DiCaprio estimates that 1.2 billion of the world’s persons do not have access to safe drinking water) ” and he is a fervid advocate of sustaining the earth’s biodiversity.

Philanthropic  Sportsmen

Federer believes sport may help win a victory over injustice and build bridges amongst cultures. “As tennis players, we have a distinguishable opportunity,” he says. “We are given a prospect to visit so a lot of dissimilar countries and cultures and interact with humans from all walks of life. It is our obligation to…use our fortune to make a divergence in the lives of those who most need it. If I may make a contribution to this, I am more than happy to do so.”

Fulfilling  Dreams

As a child, Tiger Woods dreamed when it comes to getting the world’s best golfer. “I worked hard,” he says, “and used my family’s values to everything I did. Integrity, honesty, discipline, obligation and fun ” I learned these values at home and in school, each one pushing me further toward my dream.” Knowing that thousands of other children dream in regards to their futures too, Tiger and his father set up the Tiger Woods Foundation in 1996. “Through personal enrichment programmes, scholarships, direct grants, junior golf teams, and the new Tiger Woods Learning Center finished in 2005,” explains Tiger, “the foundation is helping millions of children reach their dreams.”

Many young people today are overwhelmed by the pressures of life, engaged in a struggle and attempting to survive. I am supporting the Jordan Institute for Families because I believe that everything that may be done ought to be done to preserve the family and to improve the quality of life for all individuals, particularly children and the elderly.” Jordan remains involved with the Boys & Girls Club of America, UNCF/College Fund, Special Olympics and a assortment of other organisations supporting children and families.

Today, marriages have a 50 percent chance of lasting. Longing to improve those odds, pastor Clayton King, author of the general Dying to Live, and his wife, Charie, disclose a revolutionary biblical perspective—at the heart of a godly union is a heart of service. Love is more with regards to understanding one’s spouse than being understood.

Offering wisdom from God’s Word and beneficial counsel from their decade of marriage, the Kings present 12 relationship-building questions for couples to ask before they wed. They guide and give hope or courage to couples to talk about their:

religious  backgrounds

past  relationships

desires  for  family  and  future

financial  habits  and  goals

vocational  aspirations

These questions disclose expected values and worries and aid each person perceive the needs and hopes of their loved one. There are a lot of pre-marriage books out there that are good but this one is GREAT and I’ve started using it for marriage counseling with young couples and they to walked away blessed and ready for marriage.

Student Pastors, young humans and parents get this book and challenge your child to grasp what marriage is all about.

Clayton and Charie King have written a helpful and practical book for young adults and others. Many today are nervous with regards to marriage because they see failure all around them. Others have never seen a outstanding and godly marriage, so they do not recognise what that looks like. The Kings show the wonderful, positive, beauteous side of a marriage founded in Christ without ignoring the real struggles we all face. I will be having the couples I counsel read this one, and I give hope or courage to you to do the same.

Boy was I defective but I loved the book. It forced me to look at myself, my thought patterns and habits, where my heart is and how my heart is reflected through actions. I HIGHLY commend this to any individual looking to get married, all ages, all stages of life. It is also a book for singles and marrieds alike. I like that it pointed me to where I am and gave instructions on how to move forward. Even if you don’t buy into the whole church/ Jesus thing this counsel is just plain good mutual sense. The Bible, in general, is a good rule of thumb. Not to take away from how awful a kinship with Jesus is but don’t timid away from the book just because you aren’t a believer. Thank you Clayton and Charie for being transparent and pouring into people from your overflow.

There are so some hot girls on MySpace that if you aren’t taking vantage of that sweet fact then you are cheating yourself my friend! But before you go right on in there messaging hot girls, make sure you don’t make a fool out of yourself and follow these easy tips first.

1. Show yourself on your profile picture being with a very hot girl. Trust me, this works! She’ll recognise you’re a fun popular guy who has women around him.

2. Show an array of cool photos in your profile doing dissimilar things. Cool hobbies (rock climbing etc), more hot women, famous landmarks or people. Only then do you show yourself with your mates.

3. Never show yourself posing either with your top off showing off your body or keeping your camera out with your own hand.

4. Never show your kinship status. This is BAD! She must have to ASK you to find that out! Also if she know you’re single then it’s evident why you are messaging her.

5. Never poke her, do real men need to do that?

6. Show your ex’s. That’s right, show that you have ex girlfriends because you’re a great guy and women find you attractive.

7. Do not have your profile open for random access. She must have to request you to add her. This gives you a subtle psychological advantage!

8. Take all the boring and negative wall posts and delete them. She ought to not be seeing that your mates have invited you over to spend your Saturday night playing on the xbox.

Myspace  Girls

This study examined 50 MySpace profiles constructed by 14-17 year old African American females attending a Los Angeles public high school for the duration of the 2007-8 academic year. The text, images and multimedia apps found in these profiles were analyzed in relation to gender and racial ideologies that permeate standard mass media. These public profiles function as intersectional digital bodies wherein signs and messages used to commune and socialize with others are publicly broadcast on the Internet. MySpace is a corporate entity ripe for viral selling and altho promotion is portion of it is social fabric, most profiles in this sample were for the most part devoid of logos and did not link to corporate profiles as ?friends? within the network. These profiles did disclose images and text that were ideologically aligned with white, heterosexual love, Western standards of beauty and constructions of femininity. However, they did not transmit racist or homophobic ideologies by way of images, text or multimedia applications. Ultimately these profiles represent the originative and multifaceted digital identities constructed by a select group of young African American females on MySpace.
