5This is cool!

This tool works in truth well in planing down concrete. We stain a lot of concrete, and sometimes, exceptionally around floor plugs, the finisher will leave it real rough. This planes it down to be rather smooth, and in not one thing flat (pun intended). (The only downside, of course, is that it will expose the sand and aggregate, which won’t take the color the same – this needs to be explained to the client first). You may use it to get more aggressive with leveling out uneven concrete edges as well (like amongst two distinguished slabs of a sidewalk or something).

Update May 2008
OK, now that we’ve applied it a bunch, there are a few things that would cause me to take it down a half star or perhaps one star…

1. The roller in front in truth limits how close you may get to a wall, as you might guess, particularly in corners.
2. Replacing the diamond wheel is rather costly (like $350 or so).
3. As much as you tell the client “it won’t look the same, because you are grinding down and exposing the sand and aggregate”, they are actually listening with their heart, rather than their heads, so there is a potential for disappointment.
4. As much as you tell the client “as a a planer it will only remove mountains, it won’t fill in valleys”, they are actually listening with their heart, rather than their heads, so there is a potential for disappointment.

We still use this tool, but I now like the Bosch 1773 Bosch 1773AK 10 Amp 5-Inch Concrete Surfacing Grinder better. We employed the Bosch almost totally for a while, until it was stolen (As an detached – I never actually trade a employed power tool, I just keep getting them fixed until they are stolen. Sigh).
