Developing an primary sound is very important if you’ve ever dreamed regarding having a successful

music career. Today I often see young artists following a usual trend or attempting to sound like someone famous. This may get them a gig, but it in all likelihood won’t get them a recording contract. If you want to stand out from the crowd and be noticed by the record industry, you’ll need to have your own distinguishable style and voice. Not inevitably bizaare, just something that defines you.

As a songwriter and/or musician, you may have tried to mimic the style and sound of your favored group or singer at one time or another. This is normal and may be beneficial in the early stages of your musical development. Much may be learned from looking at and studying the bequest of rock n’ roll giants who have paved the way before us. But you are a distinguishable person and, as such, have something primary to offer as well.

I have personally been a fan of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones all around the past few decades.

These two super-groups rose to fame, almost side-by-side, for the duration of the early 1960s. Members of each group were friends and would now and again hang-out together. But over the years a debate arose as to which is the biggest rock band in the world- The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. Well, if you’re still undecided, consider this. Back in 1963 when The Beatles were beginning to be recognized as the hottest new phenomenon on the music scene, The Stones were also charting on the radio with a

song called, “I Wanna Be Your Man.” Funny thing is, the song had been written by Lennon-McCartney and given to The Stones as a favor.

Although their music may have shared a lot of similarities, the two groups were distinctly dissimilar and each had their own firstborn sound. For instance, The Beatles staged a musical picture of fun, social consciousness, and uttermost originative energy. Their producer, George Martin, once said: “The Beatles unquestionably had an eternal curiosity for doing something different.” The Stones on the other hand, have a more tough, raunchy and rebellious image. In fact, they employed to be known as the “bad boys” of rock n’ roll. These divergences are reflected in each group’s songs as well. The Beatles gave us “All You Need Is Love” whereas The Stones gave us “Street Fighting Man.”

I’ve never had the priviledge of seeing The Beatles (other than George Harrison, that is) in concert. But I did see The Rolling Stones three times and even got back stage once! So, you might say both groups have had rather an influence on me musically. I was likewise to a considerable degree influenced by Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, amidst others.

Though my music has rock and folk overtones, I don’t try to sound like any person else when I

write a song. However, I will on occasion get an idea from one of my “music mentors” and integrate that into a song. For example, not too long ago my husband and I wrote and recorded an firstborn song called “Hope.” I’ve always liked how the Indigo Girls use overlaping verses in a lot of of their songs and wanted to try that idea in our song. So we developed a bridge where my husband is singing a verse with a peculiar melody and then I come in singing something completely dissimilar over the top. It’s finelooking cool, and we don’t sound anything like the Indigo Girls!

You will start out to give rise to your own introductory sound when you get started using your distinguishable personality,

experiences, and perspective to express yourself musically. By combining these traits and perfecting your musical skills, you will be moving along the road to success.

Myhope Original Song

The film’s soundtrack was freed in 1998 under the production of Don Was. The album included the works of assorted country music and adult contemporary artists, including Garth Brooks, The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger and Sheryl Crow. One of it is cuts, Brooks’s “To Make You Feel My Love,” was a Number One single on the Billboard country singles charts in August 1998.

Though it follows a standard movie formula and predictable plot twists, the film Hope Floats is saved in percentage by the above-average performance of Sandra Bullock, portraying a divided woman who finds her way back to her hometown in Texas, daughter in tow. The soundtrack seems to follow in due course, a collection of country and rock (thanks to the Rolling Stones) acts adding shades of twang to songs that, for the most part, all sound reasonably familiar. The duds of the bunch, Bryan Adams’s “When You Love Someone” and Sheryl Crow’s “In Need,” are saved in big percentage by numerous surprise keepers, courtesy of Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, and Gillian Welch. The covers are interesting enough. Brooks’s take on Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love” is modest and pithy and a far cry from the overblown Trisha Yearwood performance of the same tune that codas the collection. –Jason Verlinde

Entertainment WeeklyDon Was has made his name as purveyor of grown-up origins pop, a genre that runs through the album like wild horses. Sometimes it works: Witness Gillian Welch’s “Paper Wings,” which resurrects the dark side of Patsy Cline. Yet Was’ penchant for adult-oriented tastefulness likewise leads to sop like Bob Seger and Martina McBride’s “Chances Are”… and not one but two vanilla-wafer covers of Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love” (by Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood).

USA Today[ Hope Floats] is a self-contained musical feast that likewise perfectly conjures the film’s cycle of heartbreak, healing and renewed hope…. Several tracks capture the pain of lost love, though none as palpably as Gillian Welch’s aching “Paper Wings” (“Paper wings, not real at all, but they took me high sufficient to genuinely fall”). Lyle Lovett’s resurrection of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” nails the classic’s ambiguity in a reading that darts from the optimisti feeling that all is going to turn out well to feigned courage.

5A Little Lift For Your Day….
By L. Shirley
This review refers to the CD edition of “Hope Floats: Music From The Motion Picure” (Various Artists – Soundtrack)….

“When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to arid your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love….” (Garth Brooks)

Those words are just a taste of the pretty lyrics to be found on this album. The CD is filled with poignant moments, you’ll want to listen to again and again.

“Hope Floats” directed by Forest Whitaker, is a finelooking film. The story revolves around Birdie, a woman who has been terribly hurt by her husband and best friend. She loses all self-esteem, and builds a wall around herself that is so strong, it seems like not a single soul will ever break through again. Whitaker has added the perfective soundtrack to this story. The music and words are finelooking and meaningful. They are a strong statement, speaking of all the emotions Birdie is going through, and how those close to her fetch her the strength she needs to recover, count her blessings, and open her heart once again.

Every track evokes a great deal of sort of emotion, from a smile to a tear. It’s a outstanding mix of dissimilar styles. Lyle Lovett’s rendition of “Smile” may even fetch goose bumps or a lump to your throat. “Chances Are” is a wondrously touching duet from Bob Seger and Martina McBride. Also included are The Rolling Stones’ “Honest I Do”, Garth Brooks’, “To Make You Feel My Love”, likewise a lovely version by Trisha Yearwood of that one, Sheryl Crow’s “In Need”, a extremely pleasing rendition of “Stop In The Name Of Love” by Jonelle Mosser, and Bryan Adams’ pretty tones are oh so recognizable in “When You Love Someone”. (For a finish list of songs and artists, please see the buying info.)

I am an avid film viewer, and each once in a while the music from the film touches me as much as the film itself. This is one of those soundtracks that I just couldn’t get sufficient of. It’s perfective for that lunch break, possibly on a day when things aren’t going so great. The music is calming, and the words will give you just that lift you need to get you through the rest of the day. If you have seen the film you will relive all the fantasti moments. Even if you haven’t, the music speaks for itself.

The CD sounds outstanding on the stereo. And by the way, it comes with a booklet with all the words to each song and includes numerous photos from the film as well. It’s a CD that seems to be hard to come by right now. Be patient, watch the outside vendors for a good deal(you may want to check with them to be sure the booklet is included). I am including the ASIN because there seems to be galore confusedness amongst the soundtrack with respective artists(this one), and the movie score itself. ASIN: B000006359

“If you smile through your fears and sorrows,
Smile and possibly tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through….”(Lyle Lovett)

Enjoy….Laurie

5A outstanding album.
By Ron
Just wanted to let any individual reading these reviews that the review by MusicFan posted September 2, 2003 with regards to how misleading these reviews are, is exclusively wrong!! Musicfan is talking regarding a exclusively dissimilar CD. He/She wanted the album with “various artists” but purchased the defective one containing the “original movie soundtrack”. This is a outstanding album and worth each cent. Any of the reviews that refer to this album with 11 tracks is in the wrong place. The “various artists” album has 13 tracks. Just attempting to clear up a lot of confusion!

I wasn’t that into you at first, I thought your voice was middle of the road, and your looks were eh. But you grew on me. After a few videos, I started noticing how excellent your uke playing is, and soon enough, I noticed that your voice was actually pretty good, and that your hair kinda frames your face and makes you look really cute. After having seen this video, I think that you should make an album and model.
