Have you ever wondered what makes Korean dramas so popular among Asians? Why do you think they stay glued to their television sets time and again to watch series after series that seem to follow the same old plot lines and twists? I believe that these shows are capable establish a strong aroused connection with it is audience.

And this is the main reason they find these shows so addicting. Life isn’t easy. There are times when you feel genuinely happy. But for the most portion you are engaged in a struggle to make a living, or nursing the wounds of your lately concluded love life. Then you watch this television show from Korea and you go: ‘Hey, this girl or guy is going through precisely the same thing I am.’

So you start out observing each episode of the show. Each time an episode ends with a cliffhanger forcing you to watch the commence of the next one in order to find out what happens. Sometimes these Korean dramas have stories that become unrealistically depressing. Characters commence losing their memories and getting into freak accidents for no evident reason.

And all the more viewers will watch. They believe that if this reputation may win a victory over such difficult problems, then perhaps there is hope for them as well. At times, the series has a happy ending which is all well and good. Other times, the story ends in tragedy. And you seem to agree with the sad ending because that’s life.

Being competent to watch the lives of others unfold-even if these persons are of a dissimilar culture or race-is very endearing. After all, we are all humans. We have the same emotions and the same yearning for love. The best Korean actors and actresses have the power to make you cry and laugh together with them. To make you empathize in all their endeavors.

People who watch Korean dramas do so because they want to get on the roller coaster ride of emotions that only a well-made drama may give.

One of the most acclaimed series on TV for the duration of it is brief run from 1994-1995, My So-Called Life initiated the modern teen drama and made a star out of 15-year-old Claire Danes. Ostensibly centering around the tryouts and tribulations of high schooler Angela Chase, My So-Called Life actually expanded to include every one in it is protagonist’s orbit, from school friends to extended family, and gave it is stellar ensemble cast ripe material to work with for the duration of it is too-short life. Produced by thirtysomething creators Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, MSCL evoked that yuppie-friendly show with it is special importance and significance on finding extraordinary drama within frequent situations, but was far more heartfelt and heart-wrenching, echoing the dizzying highs and lows of adolescence. As such, it produced a cult following amidst young viewers who identified strongly with Angela’s high school traumas and followed her each move with rapt attention. (After cancellation, the show enjoyed a ordinary reprise on MTV.)

Avoiding the sensational, My So-Called Life tackled each teen hot-button issue imaginable (and initiated the then-controversial topic of teen homosexuality), but with a clear-eyed perspective, never dissolving into soap opera-–even when Angela mooned over heartthrob Jordan Catalano (dreamy Jared Leto). Even as it mined adolescent angst, though, My So-Called Life never lost sight of it is adults, with Bess Armstrong and Tom Irwin both extraordinary as Angela’s parents, whose marriage was one of the most complex seen on TV since… well, thirtysomething. Through it all, Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Danes was a neurotic, touching, and funny center, whether obsessing over a zit or negotiating the rocky terrain of firstborn love. Her funny, sobering, and empathetic portrait of teendom reminded us that in galore ways, life was just an extended version of high school. –Mark Englehart

5A Realistic View of High School
By Amanda
I am so glad I never watched this show when it was initial on, because I would have been outraged when it was cancelled. Instead, I caught the marathon on MTV – I watched each episode, back-to-back, and enjoyed each second of each episode. A couple of years later, I got into observing Dawson’s Creek and was highly amused by how each single high school reputation talked like a college scholar. I thought that it was refreshing. But now, looking back at My So-Called Life, I realize that it was so much better than any teen drama today. Angela Chase (wonderfully portrayed by Claire Danes) is like a lot of girls in high school: shy, insecure, and in love with the cutest (and baddest) boy in school. She never applied big words, she never tried to be clever or cute. In other words, she is the realistic version of a high school student. She had a wild and crazy best friend, a geeky boy throughout the street who loved her, caring parents, a sometimes-annoying younger sister, and in the end the coolest guy in school as her boyfriend. A lot of persons thought the Angela/Jordan kinship was a little far-fetched, asking themselves what he would ever see in a girl like her. I thought the idea of their kinship was wonderful, far-fetched or not: it showed young women that they don’t have to be easy and dress provocatively to get guys to observe them.

To this day, I’m still amazed that this show was so short-lived. It dealt with severe issues such as drugs, sex, violence, and it dealt with them realistically. I realize now that My So-Called life was the clever one, not Dawson’s Creek. This DVD is a must-have for the a lot of die-hard fans the show still has today. One thing is for sure: the show may have been cancelled, but it will never be forgotten.
